10 best selling smartphones in the first quarter of 2024

A report has revealed that Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max was the best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of 2024.

Data compiled by Counterpoint Research shows that Apple and Samsung dominated the list of top 10 best-selling smartphones during the same period.

Both manufacturers secured five positions each, leaving no room for other brands.

This was the first quarter in which the top 10 smartphones were all 5G capable, Counterpoint said.

Three variants of the iPhone 15 held the top three spots, while the other, the iPhone 15 Plus, was the eighth best-selling.

The ranking shows that the iPhone 14, in fourth place, was the second top performer for Apple.

Samsung's best performer was the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which was the fifth best-selling phone in the quarter.

The base Galaxy S24 model came in ninth place.

Samsung's three other models – Galaxy A15 5G, Galaxy A54 and Galaxy A34 – ranked sixth, seventh and tenth respectively.

“Consumers are holding on to their smartphones longer because upgrades are offering limited differences in features,” Counterpoint Research said.

“This drives consumers to opt for higher-end smartphones to ensure that their devices remain technologically relevant over the long term.”

A separate study this month by Counterpoint Research showed that global smartphone revenue reached a new high in the first quarter of 2024 due to Apple and higher sales in key regions around the world.

Revenue in the industry jumped 7 percent to the highest level in the March quarter. However, Counterpoint did not provide an estimate on the actual value of the revenue.

Smartphone manufacturers generally do not report details of their sales. According to industry analysts, Apple's iPhone sales in the first quarter are estimated to be approximately $69.7 billion.

Apple contributed 41 percent of first-quarter revenue as it recorded its first-quarter average selling price of $900, up from $880 a year earlier.

Samsung Electronics stood second with 18 percent share, followed by Xiaomi and Oppo with 6 percent each and Vivo with 4 percent. The ASPs of the four companies were $336, $159, $257 and $211 respectively.

Counterpoint said in its latest report that the trend towards premium was clear, with seven of the top 10 smartphones in that category, with wholesale prices of $600 and above.

“Going forward, we expect the top 10 best-selling smartphones to capture a larger share of total smartphone sales as original equipment manufacturers focus on leaner portfolios with premium features, including generative AI,” the report said. Are.”

The study found that the Pro Max variant took the top spot for the first time in Apple's non-seasonal quarter, reflecting a growing trend of consumer preference for high-end smartphones.

According to Counterpoint Research, the growing popularity of the Apple Pro line-up was evident, as it accounted for half of Apple's total sales in the first quarter of 2024, a significant increase from 24 percent in the same period in 2020.

“Pro iPhones have become the key revenue driver for Apple, contributing more than 60 percent of its sales value in the first quarter of this year,” the consultancy said.

“The Pro line-up offers substantial upgrades and significant enhancements compared to the base models. This strategic move has proven successful, as consumers are willing to pay for premium features.

Meanwhile, the strong performance of the S24 series can be attributed to Samsung's early refresh of the series and its efforts in generative AI technology.

“The S24 series was the first series to reach the market with GenAI features and capabilities, allowing users to create unique content and experience new levels of interactions with their smartphones,” the report said.
