The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reported a total of 11 cases of Zika virus infection since June 20, of which five infected patients are pregnant women.

In the two recent cases, a 42-year-old woman (not pregnant) from Karvenagar tested positive for Zika virus infection. According to officials, she complained of mild fever, rashes and joint pain. The woman works in the insurance department of a private hospital and had fever. The doctor at the concerned hospital sent her blood sample to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), which reported positive. The woman took all treatments on OPD basis and is at home recovering from the infection.

22-year-old man tested positive

In another case, a 22-year-old youth from Khardi village was brought to PMC's Kodre Hospital for treatment after complaining of fever and rash. On Saturday, his sample was taken and sent to NIV, where the report confirmed Zika virus infection. The youth is currently undergoing treatment.

A PMC official said, “Since the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Yerwada Nagar Road zonal office, preventive measures were implemented there by a team of the concerned circle medical officers on Sunday.”

Three new cases of Zika virus infection were reported on Saturday, all of them pregnant women. Earlier these cases were reported only from Erandwane, Mundhwa and Dahanukar Colony, but gradually the virus is spreading in Pune city and rural areas as well.

On Saturday, a new case was reported from Ambegaon in Pune rural and the fresh two cases were from Khardi rural and the other from Karvenagar.
