A 12-year-old girl undergoing treatment at Sasoon General Hospital died of the disease on Sunday. The deceased was reportedly suffering from symptoms of dengue shock syndrome, officials said.
According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, the girl, a resident of Mangalwar Peth, was brought to Kamala Nehru Hospital in a critical condition on June 28. She had been suffering from fever, confusion, hypotension, diarrhoea and nausea among other complaints for the past one week. Her condition was critical and she was immediately referred to SGH for further treatment after providing first aid.
“According to official documents, the girl reportedly died due to septic shock, myocarditis and pulmonary haemorrhage caused by pancytopenia. These symptoms can also be seen in cases of severe dengue fever,” said Dr Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer, PMC.
Confirming this, SGH medical superintendent Dr Yellappa Jadhav said that the girl had complained of symptoms similar to dengue shock syndrome. “The patient was also suspected to be suffering from typhoid. The patient was provided with the necessary medical treatment. However, she died within two days and even before the reports of her samples came,” he said.
According to PMC officials, the patient was also taking alternative medicine for over a week.
Dr Gopal Ujwankar, ward medical officer of PMC, said, “Initially we suspected that the girl had typhoid infection but later tests confirmed that she did not have typhoid infection. The deceased patient may have been infected with dengue virus based on her symptoms. However, there is no confirmation on this,” he said.
Dr. Dighe further said that there is a possibility that there may have been a delay in starting the girl's treatment.
