Pictures of the accident showed the passenger bus lying on its side on a curve on the highway with its top blown off.

The tragic accident is the latest in a series of migrant deaths in Mexico as the number of migrants traveling to the US border has increased.

Last week, 10 Cuban migrants were killed – including a minor – and 17 others were seriously injured when a cargo truck they were traveling in overturned near the border with Guatemala in the neighboring state of Chiapas. They crashed on the highway.

The driver of the vehicle was apparently speeding and lost control of the truck, which was carrying 27 migrants at the time, the institute said. The driver escaped from the spot.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Last week, a truck overturned on a highway in the same Mexican state of Chiapas, killing two Central American migrants and injuring 27 others.

A large number of migrants are making the perilous journey across the Mexican border to seek asylum in the United States.

In September alone, more than 260,000 immigrants entered the U.S. — setting a new monthly record that rivals the population of citizens living in St. Petersburg, Fla.
