Gurgaon police have arrested two persons for allegedly impersonating employees of a fuel distribution company and cheating consumers. Police have identified the accused as Ashish, a resident of Balwa village in Bihar’s Buxar district, and Dushant, a resident of Sherpur Hari Singh Market in Delhi.

According to officials, on September 30, the manager of Haryana City Gas Distribution Limited in Gurgaon lodged a written complaint with the cybercrime police station, stating that unknown persons were making threatening calls to his employees, his customers. trying to get private information about, and defrauding consumers by charging them in their company’s name for gas usage. An FIR was registered at the police station under relevant provisions.

A team of Cybercrime Assistant Commissioner of Police Vipin Ahlawat and Inspector Poonam Singh arrested the two accused from Chakrapur in Gurgaon on Thursday.

According to the police, Ashish was earlier working in Haryana City Gas Distribution Limited. He and Deshant allegedly searched for customer information using customer relationship numbers on Google Pay, Phone Pay and Paytm while pretending to be employees of the company. They then called the customers using the company’s landline number and sought information about their bills and mobile numbers, police said.

Later, Ashish will use the information obtained to create a UPIID linked to his mother’s bank account and send a text message to the user. Police added that Deshant would pretend to be a customer service representative of Haryana City Gas Distribution Limited, then call the customer to finalize the payment, and carry out the fraud.

The accused have committed similar fraud in nine cases so far, police said.
