5 masked men attack 2 people after high school graduation in New York

Two people were injured when five masked men attacked a New York high school graduation ceremony on Wednesday, school officials said. One man was stabbed in the ear and another in the leg.

The attack occurred outside the Hofstra University athletic complex on Long Island as graduates of Hempstead and Uniondale high schools were leaving campus with their families, according to a statement from the schools.

The statement said the man who was stabbed in the leg was a guest of a student. The student intervened and was stabbed in the ear, according to the statement.

Both victims were taken to a local hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The Nassau County Police Department said they responded to a report of a possible assault on the Hofstra campus at about 4:20 p.m. It was not immediately clear if the attackers were in custody.

According to a statement issued by the schools, the attack is believed to be related to a domestic dispute, and all attendees at the event were subjected to a magnetometer.

“We emphasize that this incident occurred outside of the graduation venue,” the statement said. “Our security team is cooperating with Nassau County Police and Hofstra Public Safety officials.”

A Hofstra University spokeswoman said the campus was secure and that she had referred additional questions to police.

Additional details about the incident were not immediately available.
