70-year-old man with two artificial heart valves undergoes double valve replacement in Chennai

A 71-year-old patient with a complex history of cardiac problems has successfully undergone TRIC valve implantation at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. It is a procedure in which two artificial valves are implanted in the heart.

Apart from comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension, the patient had already undergone two heart valve replacements. He came with symptoms that significantly reduced his quality of life. With this procedure, the patient has four artificial valves in his cardiovascular system, which is the first such case in India, said the press release issued by the hospital.

Since conventional surgery was very risky due to his frail condition and multiple co-morbidities, the team, led by senior interventional cardiology consultant Refai Shokathali, opted for the pinhole (minimally invasive) TRIC valve approach. “This innovative technique involves implanting a bioprosthetic valve in the major veins leading to the heart through a small pinhole procedure in the groin, significantly reducing surgical risk and recovery time,” the release said.

“Compared to traditional open-heart surgery, the TRIC valve procedure results in faster recovery and less discomfort, allowing patients to return to their daily activities faster,” said Dr. Shaukathli.

Post-operative assessment showed substantial improvement in cardiac performance and a significant reduction in symptoms, the hospital said.
