'90% booths compromised': BJP's Madhavi Latha files case for checking voter IDs of burqa-wearing women in Hyderabad

Madhavi Latha, the BJP candidate from Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha elections, said on Monday that 90 percent of the polling booths in the constituency have been compromised. This is when she ran into a controversy when a video of her allegedly checking voter IDs of burqa-clad Muslim women at a polling booth went viral on social media. Soon after the incident, during the fourth phase of polling, the election authorities registered a case against him.

She was also seen telling the policemen that voters should be allowed into the polling booths only after thorough vetting. “90% booths have been compromised. Police don't want to instruct women constables to check face with voter ID. When I asked the police officer, he said it's not his responsibility…” He told the news agency ANI.

Madhvi is pitted against AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and BRS's Gadam Srinivas Yadav in the high-profile Hyderabad seat. In the viral video, she was asking women voters to lift their burqas and show their faces to verify identity at a polling booth in Azampur.

The BJP candidate said that he had only requested women to verify their identity and there was nothing wrong with it. “I am a candidate. According to the law a candidate has the right to check the identity card without a face mask. I am not a man, I am a woman and very humbly, I have only requested them – can I Can I confirm by looking at the card? If someone wants to make a big issue out of it, it means they are scared,” he said.

A case was registered against him under sections 171C, 186, 505(1)(c) of the Indian Penal Code and section 132 of the Representation of the Public Act at the Malikpet police station. Section 171C deals with interference or attempts to interfere with the free exercise of any electoral right. Section 186 deals with any public servant voluntarily obstructing a public function, while Section 505 applies to inciting or inciting any class or community to commit an offense against another class or community. Congress attacked BJP.

Reacting to the controversy, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy accused the BJP of trying to polarize Muslim votes and said such moves by the saffron party would help Owaisi win from Hyderabad. Help will come.

“I have not seen (the video) but BJP is only trying to polarize Muslim votes to win but all these matters are going to help Asaduddin Owaisi. It will not help the BJP,” he said when asked about the video.
