A 12-year-old girl died after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming in an Australian creek.

Australian authorities discovered the remains of a 12-year-old girl on Thursday after she was allegedly snatched by a crocodile while swimming in a creek.

“It was a very difficult, basically 36-hour, difficult search for the first responders involved,” Police Senior Sergeant Erica Gibson told reporters.

A nearly two-day search by land, air and water began after the child went missing.

Her remains were discovered near the river where the girl went missing, in the indigenous community of Palumpa, southwest of the Northern Territory capital, Darwin.

Sergeant Gibson confirmed the girl's injuries were from a crocodile attack, adding that she had recovered. This was a particularly gruesome and tragic, devastating outcome.

“However, for the family, this is the most devastating outcome for them. They are in a state of utter shock and disbelief,” added Gibson.

Saltwater crocodiles are considered territorial and the killer reptiles may still be in nearby waterways.

According to the Associated Press, he is known as a common threat in the Northern Territory.

Northern Australia has a tropical climate, which has supported the growth of saltwater crocodile populations since the populations were protected under Australian law in the 1970s.
