A laborer (24) died after being buried under garbage at the Bandhwari landfill site in Gurgaon.

GURGAON: A 24-year-old worker at the Bandhwari Landfill died on Monday when a huge pile of garbage hit a slope, got stuck and buried under him.

Rabi Yadav, a native of UP's Aligarh, was employed as a thermal machine operator by a private agency hired by the MCG to process at the landfill, police said.

Other workers told TOI on Thursday that Yadav was inspecting an excavator for any sign of spark around 4 pm, when he got down from the machine and waste started sliding on him.

An activist said, “Workers nearby raised the alarm and alerted the security personnel present. They tried to rescue Yadav from the garbage dump. After pulling him out, they took him to a nearby private hospital. Our Despite best efforts, he died,” said a worker.

SI Balram, in-charge of Gowalpahari police post, said that the police received a call from the doctors at the hospital. “He died of suffocation on the way to the hospital. In the CCTV footage, two other workers were close to Yadav but could not even realize what had happened suddenly,” the SI said. .

Police have initiated legal proceedings under CrPC section 174 (for inquiry and reporting). “The post-mortem examination was conducted and his body was handed over to his family. Investigation is on,” the SI added.

This incident emphasizes the working conditions of sanitation personnel and the need to take precautions to avoid accidents on duty.

Asked if they wear protective gear while working at the landfill, another worker said the corporation has asked them to use helmets, safety shoes and jackets, and the agency that employs them. has provided this equipment, but lacks compliance.

“Without a rigorous system to monitor if workers are wearing protective equipment, many staff neglect to follow protocol, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries,” the staff said.

None of those working at the landfill were wearing any protective gear Thursday, crews said.

Four agencies have employed 120 workers to clear legacy waste in Bandhwari. “As per our agreement with the agencies, it is their responsibility to provide safety equipment to workers and ensure enforcement of labor laws,” said an MCG official.

MCG commissioner Narhari Singh Bangar said Yadav's death was an “unfortunate accident”. “We recognize the issue, and will ensure that safety protocols are followed at the landfill, so that such accidents do not occur,” Banger said.
