GHAZIABAD: Two youths returning home on foot from a nearby gym in Vasundhara were allegedly harassed by two bike-borne men who rode alongside them, made obscene comments and sped away on Tuesday evening. Caught one of them first.

“The gym was just 10 minutes from my friend’s place. As we were going back, two bikers slowed down from our side and the plane rider caught me. They then sped up while the plane rider commented and smiled at us,” he said.
“It all happened so fast that we couldn’t react,” his friend said.
“She was shocked, and started crying. Seeing us, an elderly man offered to let us out of the house, but we were too scared to seek help. We took a rickshaw and reached home,” said the 23-year-old.
He said the incident had created fear.
“I’ve lived in this neighborhood since I was a little girl and walking down these streets with my friends thinking it’s ‘my neighborhood’ and I’m not going to get hurt, it’s really hurtful and disgusting… has made me. The question is, if walking these streets in the evening, which is also a busy time, I can do without fear of being molested or pulled over in a van. Clearly no fear of the law. No,” he added.
The 22-year-old also said the incident left her “disturbed” and unable to work all day.
“Such incidents leave a scar. It is unfortunate that women are not safe anywhere in our country. I am afraid to walk on the streets now,” she said.
The woman filed a complaint at the Kotwali Indirapuram police station on Thursday. In the complaint, he said the motorcyclists were not wearing helmets and the plane rider was wearing a light blue shirt.
An FIR was registered under IPC sections 354 (molestation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to incite breach of peace) against two unidentified persons.
Indirapuram police station SHO Yogendra Singh said, “A police team has been formed to nab the accused and the police are examining the CCTV footage of the motorcycle and nearby areas to identify the accused. “
A grocery shop owner told TOI that he witnessed the incident on Tuesday.
“I was inside the shop when it happened. Some youths tried to catch the bikers but they couldn’t move. It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like this here… It’s alarming that this could happen here, ” he said.
Other residents of the sector said such incidents were rare, but snatchings were frequently reported because there were few street lights in the area. He said that there are no CCTV cameras on the roads.
Other women also expressed concern for their safety. The adjoining road of Nahar Gully is even more dangerous. After evening, the road gets dark as there are no street lights,” said a resident of a nearby colony.
According to the data of the National Commission for Women, 623 cases of sexual harassment, 1182 cases of rape or attempted rape and 222 cases of rape have been registered across the country in the first eight months of this year. A total of 22,601 crimes were registered against women, of which 12,376 were in UP.
