New Delhi: Union Health Secretary Apoorva Chandra on Wednesday wrote a letter to all state chief secretaries and DGPs regarding healthcare amid the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. Outlined measures to enhance the safety of workers.
In response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Supreme Court has set up a 10-member National Task Force to formulate safety protocols for healthcare workers. An interim report is due with the final report in two months. This decision is supported by FAIMA Doctors Association.
Steps suggested by the Center include prominently displaying relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and state laws on protection of healthcare workers in hospitals in local languages and English.

- Display of State laws for protection of health care workers and relevant sections of Bharatiya Naya Sanhita along with penal/penalty details in local language and English at prominent places within the hospital premises.
- Formation of 'Hospital Security Committee' and 'Violence Prevention Committee' comprising senior doctors and administrative officers to strategize and implement appropriate security measures.
- Regulation of access of the general public and patient's relatives to key areas of the hospital. Strict visitor pass policy for patient's attendants/relatives.
- Arranging safe movement of resident doctors/nurses to various blocks and hostel buildings and other areas of the hospital during night duty.
- Ensuring adequate lighting within all areas of residential block, hostel blocks and other hospital premises.
- 'Routine security patrol' in all hospital premises at night.
- Establishment of 24/7 main security control room in hospitals.
- Establish close liaison with the nearest police station.
- Formation of 'Internal Committee on Sexual Harassment' in the hospital.
- To review the status of all CCTV cameras (number and functionality) within the hospital premises and proceed for its necessary implementation/upgradation.
