Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday discussed the India-Canada dispute with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and said it was important to uphold and respect the “rule of law”.

The Canadian Prime Minister had a telephone conversation with the President of the United Arab Emirates and the two also discussed the current situation in Israel. The two leaders expressed concern over the need to protect the lives of citizens.

“On the phone today, the Honorable @MohamedBinZayed and I spoke about the current situation in Israel. We expressed our deep concern and discussed the need to protect civilian life,” Trudeau posted on X.

“We also talked about India and the importance of upholding and respecting the rule of law.”

On Sunday, British Prime Minister Rishi Shankar in a call with his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau called for de-escalation of the India-Canada conflict.

According to a Downing Street statement, Sink spoke to Trudeau on Friday evening during which he was briefed on the situation regarding Canadian diplomats in India.

“He (Rishisink) hoped to see a de-escalation of the situation and agreed to stay in touch with Prime Minister Trudeau on next steps,” the statement read.

Sink also reaffirmed the UK’s position that all countries must respect sovereignty and the rule of law, including the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Meanwhile, Trudeau gave an update on the situation regarding Canadian diplomats in India.

Diplomatic relations between India and Canada soured after the Canadian government expelled a senior Indian diplomat accusing India of playing a role in the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Najjar.

Subsequently, India quickly retaliated by issuing a statement denying any involvement in the matter and expelling a senior Canadian diplomat.

Additionally, amid rising tensions, India demanded parity in the number of Canadian diplomats in India.

Responding to reports claiming that India has asked Canada to remove 41 of its 62 diplomats in the country, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arndam Bagchi said earlier this month that Canada in India has a large diplomatic presence and believes that “there will be a shortage”.

“On the discussion on parity, given the heavy presence of diplomats or diplomatic presence here and their interference in our internal affairs, we have sought parity in our respective diplomatic presence. Discussions are on to achieve this. Given that Canada has a large diplomatic presence, we would assume there will be a reduction,” said MEA spokesperson Arndam Bagchi.
