Aim to increase Pokemon Go game users in India by 10x in 3 years: Top executive, ET Telecom


New Delhi: As mobile gaming is exploding in India with the increasing number of smartphone users (over 650 million so far), a top executive of US-based Niantic, developer of the popular Pokemon Go game, said on Sunday that The company aims to make India one of its top 5 markets globally, while the user base in the country will grow 10 times over the next three years.

Omar Tellez, vice president of emerging markets at Niantic, shared big plans with IANS on how to take augmented reality (AR)-based Pokemon Go to more users in the country.

“My aim is to grow our user base in India by 10x over the next three years and make India one of the top five markets globally with the growth of local beats, better coverage of maps, better pricing bundles and tighter communities. Relationship with,” Tellez explained.

The Pokemon Company (TPC), along with game developer Niantic, this month brought the popular game Pokemon Go to Hindi and renamed over 800 Pokemon in Hindi to strengthen its commitment to the Indian market.

On competition from games like BGMI and Call of Duty (CoD) in India, Tellez said that having more languages, going deeper into cultural, contextual elements and adding entertainment games, doing live events, special pricing for players in India, etc. And having the bundle will definitely help grow the game in the country. For gaming developers globally, including India, Niantic offers a platform called Lightship.

The executive said, “In India, we have seen incredible improvements and replacements in devices over the last two years. Our AR technology is ready for use by Indians and we are excited that Lightship has been adopted by Indian developers.”

The company now also has a team in India, which they did not have earlier. It has a team of around 13 people who work on the marketing, business development and operations sides. Tellez said Pokémon Go is the most downloaded game in history, with more than 1 billion downloads.

“App Annie, or Data AI, puts us at about 17 million monthly active users globally,” he said.

The company is now hoping to organize an eSports tournament or PvP (Player vs Player) for gamers in India soon.

The company said it will also collaborate with some of its partners to host regional qualifiers that will lead to the final competition.
