Airtel shutting down Wynk Music and partnering with Apple to bundle Apple Music and TV+ with premium Wi-Fi and postpaid plans could be beneficial for users as it could reduce the prices of the streaming service.
What is the news: Bharti Airtel will exit the music sector by shutting down the Wynk Music app, PTI reported on August 27, 2024. The news comes after the company announced a partnership with Apple to provide music and streaming services to Indian customers.
A company spokesperson said that it will absorb all employees of Wynk Music. Instead, the company will now offer Apple Music to users, while Wynk Premium users will receive exclusive offers from the telecom company for Apple. Also, according to Airtel's latest press release, the streaming service Apple TV+ will come with premium Airtel WiFi and postpaid plans. Airtel users will be able to access both Apple Music and Apple TV+ later this year.
Earlier in 2017, Wynk crossed 50 million downloads, of which 45% came from non-Airtel users. The app was a competitor to other music streaming platforms like Times Internet's Gaana, Saavn, Apple Music and Hungama at the time.
How will this partnership impact users in India?
Currently, Apple charges Rs 99 ($1.2) monthly for Apple TV+ and Apple Music in India (Rs 59 monthly for students seeking an Apple Music subscription), while in the US, it costs $10-11 per month. This partnership will further reduce Apple's prices and reach a larger audience in India. “We are thrilled that Airtel customers in India will soon be able to enjoy all the great content on Apple TV+ and Apple Music,” Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music, Apple TV+, Sports and Beats, said in a press release.
