Hyderabad:

In a brazen show of VIP culture, an Andhra Pradesh MLA slapped a voter, allegedly after he objected to the legislator's queue jumping at a polling booth in Guntur district this morning.

In a video that has now gone viral, YSR Congress Party MLA Shivakumar of Tenali is seen approaching a voter and slapping him on the face. The voter hits back, and the MLA's aides join him in attacking the voter in every possible way. Other voters waiting for their turn are seen trying to stop the attack as the MLA's aides continue to beat the voter. In the 10-second video, no security personnel can be seen intervening to save the voter.

It is not clear what actually happened before the scuffle broke out, but the MLA's attack on the voter has come under fire on social media.

Voting for 25 Lok Sabha seats and 175 Assembly seats of Andhra Pradesh is going on today. The YSR Congress Party government led by YS Jaganmohan Reddy is opposed to the alliance of the BJP and the Telugu Desam Party led by N. Chandrababu Naidu.

TDP spokesperson Jyotsana Tarungi told NDTV that the incident was capturing the frustration of the ruling party “because they know they are losing”. “It's ridiculous. The voter retaliation shows people are not going to put up with this nonsense anymore.”

YSR Congress Party MLA Abdul Hafeez Khan has said that he is reviewing the viral video and has alleged a conspiracy to defame the ruling party. On its social media handles, the party shared pictures of its injured supporters and workers and alleged that they were assaulted by TDP members.

The viral video comes in the backdrop of a high-octane election campaign in Andhra Pradesh, with TDP and YSR Congress party leaders exchanging tough words ahead of the polls. Anger is also running high because both parties have a lot at stake in this election. Mr. Reddy, who has been in the saddle for a decade now, is looking to repeat his victory in these elections. On the other side is Mr. Naidu, who has joined the BJP in a strong push to return to power.
