Android 15 just hit a major milestone

It's beta software season, baby. Google is releasing the third beta of Android 15 today, taking it one step closer to its final release. With this update, the platform reaches stability, which means the APIs are finalized and developers can start testing their apps with this nearly final version. Not much has changed since the last beta came out, but that doesn't mean there aren't still some interesting tidbits to uncover.

In the blog post announcing the new beta, Google has highlighted a significant change in the passkey UI. Now, using a passkey with biometric authentication happens in one step instead of two , The Google Password Manager prompt to use a passkey has been combined with the biometric input screen. You can also access new fallback options in the Keyboard and Text Field drop-down menus if you accidentally tap past the passkey prompt. Useful!

And obviously, there is still a lot to uncover in Android 15 – even though it is close to its final form. Android expert Mishal Rahman found that it may be able to identify when a biometric model is not working properly, remove it automatically, and then will prompt you to re-enroll. You can already do this manually, but it will help those who don't understand that biometric redo can improve performance. As Rahman explains, there are many factors that affect how well a biometric model will work, and re-enrollment can often fix problems arising from an unstable model.
