According to a report by MacRumors, Apple's AirPods are about to get a significant upgrade with the integration of cameras. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that Apple will begin mass producing these AirPods with built-in infrared (IR) cameras by 2026.

The primary function of these IR cameras is to work in conjunction with Apple's Vision Pro headset, enhancing spatial computing and audio experience. Kuo said that Apple may begin mass production for new AirPods with integrated IR camera modules next year. The report also states that the IR cameras on the AirPods will be similar to the iPhone's Face ID receiver.

Purpose of IR cameras on AirPods
Apple's upcoming AirPods with built-in infrared (IR) cameras are designed to work with the Vision Pro headset and future Apple headsets. These cameras are intended to improve users' experience of spatial computing and audio. Imagine you're watching a movie while wearing the new AirPods with Vision Pro. As you turn your head to focus on a particular character on the screen, the sound coming from that direction will get louder in your AirPods, creating a more immersive experience.

IR cameras can potentially detect changes in your environment, opening the way for gesture controls. This could allow for more intuitive interactions with your Apple device.

According to reports, Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn will supply the new infrared components for the AirPods. They are preparing to make enough parts for about 10 million AirPods initially.
