Apple has released its iOS 18 software, which includes the ability for iPhone users to send Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages, and save and generate passwords from one place.
The updated Messages app also includes bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough formatting options, as well as new text effects to bring words and phrases to life.
Apple had resisted the use of RCS, but now says it offers richer media and more reliable group messaging than SMS and MMS.
The new Passwords app brings all a user's credentials such as passwords and verification codes into one place. It also alerts iPhone owners when a password is easily guessed, has been used multiple times or has appeared in a known data leak.
This update also includes home screen customization features, including creating new layouts for each page, or placing app icons and widgets within the frame of the wallpaper.
Users can also make app icons appear larger and change their color.
Apple said iOS 18 includes “the biggest update ever to Photos,” including a simplified layout and new organization categories Recent Days, People & Pets, and Trips.
The Control Center menu update brings more shortcut options and options for third-party apps to the new Control Gallery.
When Wi-Fi isn’t available, supported devices will be able to send text messages using satellite connectivity.
Apple Intelligence AI features are set to roll out in October.
iOS 18 is available for iPhone XS and later models.
