Arvind Kejriwal Hearing in Trial Court and Supreme Court: Live Updates

Arvind Kejriwal is to be produced before a trial court in Delhi in connection with a case registered against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for irregularities in the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

The CBI had taken Kejriwal's statement from jail earlier this week.

The Supreme Court will also hear an appeal filed by Kejriwal against the Delhi High Court's stay on the trial court's order granting bail in a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Delhi Excise Policy case. .

The Delhi Excise Policy case involves allegations that Kejriwal and other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders were part of a conspiracy to deliberately leave loopholes in the liquor policy to benefit some liquor sellers.

The kickbacks received for this arrangement were allegedly used to fund the AAP elections in Goa.

Kejriwal is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. He was arrested by the ED on March 21 and remained in jail until the Supreme Court (through its May 10 order) granted him interim bail for 21 days to end the trial. The campaign for the Lok Sabha elections can be carried out. He returned to prison on June 2.

Later he approached the trial court for bail.

The trial court granted bail to Kejriwal on June 20 and ordered his release subject to a surety bond of ₹ 1 lakh.

Special Judge Naye bandu The Rouse Avenue court said the ED failed to produce any direct evidence linking Kejriwal to the proceeds of crime and also failed to show that another accused, Vijay Nair, was acting on Kejriwal's behalf.

The special judge also said that the ED was acting with prejudice against Kejriwal.

The ED immediately approached the Delhi High Court and stayed the trial court's order.

In a detailed order passed on June 25, the high court concluded that the trial court's bail order was flawed and that it had not properly heard the ED before passing the order.

Because of this, Kejriwal filed the present appeal in the Supreme Court.
