The kidneys play a vital role in maintaining overall health by filtering waste and excess fluids from the blood, which are then excreted as urine. When the kidneys become damaged, their ability to perform these functions is reduced, leading to a buildup of toxins and fluids in the body. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition where kidney function deteriorates over time, often exacerbated by factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure or autoimmune disorders.
Managing diet becomes of utmost importance to maintain kidney health. Certain foods can put pressure on the kidneys due to high levels of sodium, potassium or phosphorus, which the kidneys struggle to process efficiently.

Dr Ravikant, cardiologist and senior consultant at Mudra Hospital, Pune, suggests that if you have kidney problems, you should stay away from these seven types of foods.
High-sodium foods:
Sodium Cain Raising blood pressureputs pressure on weakened kidneys. Limiting salt intake helps manage fluid retention and reduces the risk of cardiovascular complications in CKD patients.

High-potassium foods:
Excess potassium can disrupt heart rhythm, especially in advanced kidney disease where the kidneys struggle to excrete it. Foods such as bananas, oranges and potatoes should be consumed in limited quantities to prevent hyperkalemia.
Phosphorous-rich foods:

Reduced kidney function struggles to regulate phosphorus levels, leading to weakened bones and skin irritation. Avoiding phosphorus-rich foods such as dairy, nuts, and processed foods can help control phosphorus levels.
processed meats:
They are high in sodium and contain harmful substances like phosphate, which can damage the kidneys. It is better to choose lean meat and fresh options.
Sweet foods:
Excessive sugar intake Can worsen diabetes, a common comorbidity with CKD, which can further damage the kidneys. Limit intake of natural sugars and avoid sweetened beverages.
Dairy products:
Dairy products are rich in phosphorus and potassium, which are difficult for the kidneys to digest. Switching to low-phosphorus alternatives or consuming smaller amounts of milk can reduce these effects.
Caffeine and alcohol:
Both can dehydrate the body and put a strain on the kidneys. Limiting caffeine and alcohol intake improves kidney function and overall hydration status.
