TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — The most powerful typhoon to hit Shanghai since at least 1949 flooded streets with water and broken tree branches, knocked out power to some homes and left at least one person dead. was injured when it engulfed the financial center on Monday.
More than 414,000 people were evacuated ahead of strong winds and torrential rain. Schools were closed and people were advised to stay indoors.
An elderly man was injured when a tree fell on Shanghai's Chongming Island, according to state media. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Typhoon Bibanka made landfall around 7:30 a.m. with sustained winds of 151 km/h (94 mph) near its center in the sprawling Pudong business district.
Torrential rains flooded roads in the district, according to images released by state media. Elsewhere in Shanghai, uprooted trees and fallen branches left some roads and sidewalks empty. As the typhoon weakened, responders cleared nearby branches and other objects left by the storm.
More than 60,000 emergency responders and firefighters were on hand to assist in Shanghai.
Authorities said the winds uprooted or damaged more than 10,000 trees and knocked out power to at least 380 homes, damaging four.
At least 53 hectares (132 acres) of agricultural land were flooded.
The typhoon weakened as it moved inland, affecting parts of Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang provinces.
Flights, ferries and train services were suspended in the megacity and neighboring provinces, disrupting travel during China's three-day Mid-Autumn Festival. Shanghai's airports canceled hundreds of flights through Sunday and Monday, while in Hangzhou, about 170 kilometers (106 miles) southwest of Shanghai, authorities also canceled more than 180 flights.
Flights at Shanghai's airports resumed Monday afternoon as the storm receded.
Weather officials expect up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) of rain to fall between Monday and Wednesday in parts of Shanghai and neighboring provinces.
Shanghai, which has a population of 25 million, is rarely hit by typhoons, which usually make landfall further south in China.
Typhoon Yagi hits China South Hainan Island Earlier this month and has wreaked havoc across Southeast Asia. In Myanmar, Yagi At least 74 dead and dozens missing. Four deaths were reported in Hainan, at least 10 in Thailand and 20 dead. In the Philippines.
Vietnam has reported. More than 230 people have been killed and dozens are missing in the cyclone and the resulting floods and landslides.
