The Biden administration on Wednesday announced an expansion of a form of humanitarian relief for Venezuelans already in the United States, making hundreds of thousands of people eligible for work permits and New York to grant work authorization to some migrants. Potentially appealed by city officials.

The influx of migrants to New York City, many of whom are Venezuelans, has caused a rift in President Joe Biden’s relationship with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who has been a harsh critic of the administration’s handling of the migrant crisis.

Adams repeatedly urged the White House to expedite work authorization for immigrants coming to the city, so they can find jobs and not be forced to rely on the social safety net.

Immigrant advocates argued that a form of humanitarian relief, known as Temporary Protected Status, is perhaps the easiest course of action – without Congressional action – the administration could take to satisfy the request from New York. The Secretary of Homeland Security has the discretion to designate a country for TPS.

On Wednesday, DHS announced that Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is extending and redesignating Venezuela for 18 months TPS for individuals who immigrated to the U.S. on or before July 31. According to Homeland, DHS estimates that approximately 472,000 Venezuelans will be newly eligible for the status. Security Officer.

“As a result, approximately hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan citizens across the country will immediately be eligible to apply for work authorization. TPS provides temporary protection from removal, as well as employment authorization for eligible Venezuelan citizens,” the department said.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul was quick to praise the federal government’s move, citing a “fruitful conversation” she had with Biden on Tuesday night.

“I am grateful that the federal government acted so quickly to address one of our top priorities: granting Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan asylum seekers and migrants who have already arrived in this country,” the Democratic governor said in a statement. Is.” “There is still more work to do to respond to this crisis, but New York State is ready to immediately begin the process of signing people up for work authorization and getting them into jobs so they can become self-sufficient.”

On Wednesday, Hochul told CNN’s Abby Philip that the Biden administration’s extension would have a measurable impact on the growing migrant crisis in New York, even if it only applies to Venezuelans. Hochul said they make up an estimated 41% of all migrants currently living in New York shelters.

Adams told CNN on Thursday that the relief was a “starting point” to resolving the crisis. Adams said, “We appreciate that the 15,000 migrant asylum seekers are now some that we can consider taking out of our care,” but he stressed that there are still people from other countries. Thousands of immigrants are coming to New York City every month. More in care of the city.

Biden administration officials are grappling with a surge of Venezuelans arriving at the U.S. southern border. Poor relations with Venezuela have made it difficult for the US to remove citizens arrested at the border, creating a unique challenge for authorities.

Venezuela was also among the topics of discussion between Biden and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday.

Both “noted the importance of restoring democracy in Venezuela, and President Biden reiterated the United States’ support for the Venezuelan people and outlined our vision of a step-by-step approach where Venezuelan democracy is restored.” “Concrete action will be taken toward ensuring that free and fair elections are completed, complete with relief from related sanctions by the United States,” according to a readout from the White House.
