Big shock to Sri Lanka as soon as the World Cup team is announced

This is a major blow to Sri Lanka’s World Cup hopes as they will be without the services of their top spinner for the entire tournament.

Sri Lanka announced their 15-man squad on Tuesday, September 26, just two days before the ICC cut-off date. Dasun Shanaka leads the team, while Kusal Mendis is his deputy.

However, the biggest news from the Sri Lankan camp is the absence of their star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.

Hasaranga has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 due to injury.

The leg spinner suffered a thigh strain during the Lanka Premier League playoffs last month, where he finished the tournament as the top run-scorer with 279 runs and the leading wicket-taker with 19 wickets. After this, the spinner had to be ruled out of the Asia Cup due to injury.

Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga became the second bowler to take three consecutive five-wicket hauls in ODIs during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023.

Earlier, SLC had given a statement of making every possible effort to ensure Hasaranga’s participation. However, he also hinted at the possibility of Hasaranga being out of cricket for at least three months in case of surgery.

Hasaranga was a key component during the World Cup Qualifiers held in June and July, where Sri Lanka emerged victorious and secured their place in the main event in India. He topped the list of wicket-takers of the tournament with an impressive 22 wickets in just seven matches.

Despite Hasaranga’s defeat, Sri Lanka field a fairly balanced side at the global event.

Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis lead the top-order. The middle order will consist of Sadira Samarawickrama, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka and Dhananjay de Silva.

The team is full of all-round potential and is being led by captain Shanaka. Dhananjay, Dunith Velez and Asalanka are other options.

The fast bowling department has the presence of Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka, Lahiru Kumara and rising star Mathisha Pathirana. The spin attack will be led by Mahesh Theekshana, which will include Velalej, Dhananjay and others.
