BJP angry with Lalu Yadav's 'Indira Gandhi never abused us' remark on Emergency

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav's comment on the dark days of Emergency has been criticized by the BJP. In an article titled 'Singh Silence in 1975', the RJD patriarch said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imprisoned many political leaders but never abused them.

Sharing an excerpt from the article on X, the RJD chief said that despite 1975 being a stain on the country's democracy, we should not forget who does not respect the opposition in 2024.

“I was the convenor of the steering committee formed by Jay Prakash Narayan to carry forward the movement against the excesses of Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. I was under the Maintenance of Security Act (MISA). I was in jail for more than 15 months. My colleagues and I did not know many of the BJP ministers who are speaking about emergency today, we met Modi, JP Nadda, and some other ministers of the Prime Minister Hadn't heard of colleagues who lectured us today on the value of freedom

“Indira Gandhi put many of us behind bars, but she never abused us. Neither she nor her ministers called us “anti-national” or “unpatriotic. “He said. He never vandalized the memory of Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of our constitution. 1975 is a stain on our democracy, but we must not forget who does not respect the opposition in 2024,” he said. The RJD leader added.

Describing the RJD chief's comments as “petty” politics, BJP leader Nikhil Anand said, “Souls of Jaiprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia are deeply hurt by Lalu Prasad Yadav's new interpretation of the Emergency period. Lalu Prasad Yadav is almost gone, and now he wants to ensure the safety of his family and his son, that's why he has resorted to such a modest level.

The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a 21-month emergency in India on 25 June 1975.

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, considered one of the darkest periods in India's political history.
