Moitra was commenting on a video posted on X on Thursday, showing the arrival of the NCW chief at the stampede site in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras. The video attracted attention because it showed Rekha Sharma walking, her hands free, while someone was walking behind her holding an umbrella, an act that many found insensitive.

Mehwa Moitra commented on the post saying, “She's too busy picking up her boss's pajamas”.

BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla reacted to his comment, calling it “highly impolite, objectionable and shameful”.

He posted a screenshot of Moitra's comment and demanded his expulsion from the party, claiming it was the “true face” of the TMC and the opposition.

“MP Mehwa Moitra who remained silent during Sandeshkhali, Chopra Talabani flogging and remained silent on Swati Maliwal, now makes hateful comments on women and that too NCW chief,” he said.

Poonawalla also attacked the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party for their silence on Moitra's comments, “Will Priyanka Vadra, Rahul Gandhi, (Mallikarjun) Khargeji, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Chaturvedi, AAP call it?”

“Will Mamata Didi act on it? No, just like she kept quiet on Sandishakhli and (a couple flogging) in Chopra (West Bengal),” he added.

NCW chief Rekha Sharma also wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora over alleged remarks against TMC MP Mahva Moitra during her visit to Hathras.

NCW ONX also condemned the remarks made against Sharma and in a post on Twitter indicated that they planned to register an FIR against Moitra, saying, “The vile remarks are provocative and a violation of a woman's dignity.” The commission observed that this remark attracts Section 79 of the Bharatiya Sanhita, 2023. NCW strongly condemns these defamatory remarks and requests strict action against Ms. Moitra.
