Renowned camera brand Blackmagic has recently launched a camera app for Android that will bring pro-level video recording controls, but only on select devices.
Announced today, the new Blackmagic Camera app brings pro-level video recording controls to the camera you always have with you – on your phone. The app is designed to provide granular manual controls for video recording, as well as show more details like “position and record parameters, histogram, focus peaking, levels, frame guides and more.”
The app can record in H.264 and H.265 formats and integrates with Blackmagic's cloud services so clips can be shared and discussed with editors and collaborators. Clips can also be shared directly to DaVinci Resolve.
The Blackmagic Camera Media tab has all the controls you need to quickly review, search and sort clips, and browse or scrub to see the upload status of your media. Customers can also link to their DCIM folder and select clips to upload to the Blackmagic Cloud. Customers access their media from the Blackmagic Camera's All Clips folder by selecting the Media button to view thumbnails of each clip they have stored. Customers can save their media to the My Files folder on the phone, send it to Blackmagic Cloud Storage via Blackmagic Cloud, or manually select which clips to upload to the project library. Customers can also sync media from the Blackmagic Camera directly to a DaVinci Resolve project so users are ready to edit and color grade.
A cool feature of the app is the “stealth” mode that allows recording 16:9 videos even while holding the device vertically.
This app is free.
However, it is worth noting that its availability is limited. Blackmagic says the app should work on Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, but still, we noticed that it cannot be installed on some devices like the Google Pixel Fold.
You can download Blackmagic Camera from the Google Play Store today.
