New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be done informed And applied Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing a function in the national capital, Shah stressed that the CAA is an act of the country and will be notified in due course. He also clarified that the purpose of CAA is to provide citizenship and not to take away citizenship.
Amit Shah said, “CAA is a law of the land, it will be notified for sure. It will be notified before the elections.”
“CAA was a promise of the Congress government. When the country was divided and minorities were oppressed in those countries, the Congress had assured the refugees that they were welcome in India and would be given Indian citizenship. Now they are retreating”. he added.
The CAA introduced by the Narendra Modi government aims to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
“Minorities in our country, and especially our Muslim community, are being provoked. CAA cannot take away citizenship because there is no provision in the Act. CAA will give citizenship to persecuted refugees in Bangladesh and Pakistan. is an act of providing”. said.
Following the passage of the CAA by Parliament in December 2019 and subsequent presidential assent, significant protests broke out in various parts of the country.
Shah reiterated that the act does not strip anyone of their citizenship as there is no provision for it. Focusing on what's coming Lok Sabha ElectionsShah asserted that this election is about corruption versus development. He said that this is not a contest between Hindustan bloc and NDA, but a fight between corruption against corruption and zero tolerance.
“This election is about those who want to secure national security versus those who risk national security in the name of foreign policy,” the Union home minister said.
