Sour beverages typically increase levels of citrate in the urine, which can prevent stone formation by attaching itself to unabsorbed oxalate, a crystal-forming substance that comes from the bloodstream to the kidneys to be filtered. But there is no scientific evidence to prove that citric acid, which produces citrate, can break down calcium stones, which is the case in most stone patients. A well-formed stone will need to be treated medically.

We all know that citrus fruit juices are rich in vitamin C, which is an antioxidant, while potassium and magnesium are stone inhibitors. Therefore the daily recommended allowance is sufficient to prevent stone formation. Additionally, every kidney stone is different. Some are formed by calcium, struvite, uric acid and cystine. Struvite stones are caused by a bacterial infection (UTI) of the upper urinary tract, which produces ammonia and makes the urine less acidic. They grow up easily. No matter what type of stones you have, the idea is to flush out substances that are poorly absorbed by the body and deliver them to the kidneys for cleaning. Research shows that how much you drink has a greater impact on getting these out than what you drink. You have to reduce the concentration of salts that form stones and for this you have to maintain hydration by drinking three liters of water every day. If you are in an air conditioned environment then two and a half liters will do. But if you’re in a more physical, outdoor environment where you have to sweat, you’ll need to drink more than three liters of fluids.

So how do you keep your kidneys healthy? Just look at the color of urine. Dark means that your urine output should be one and a half liters every day, which means going to the washroom at least five to six times. Check your urine pH factor. An alkaline pH promotes crystallization of calcium and phosphate-containing stones, an acidic urine pH causes uric acid or cystine stones.

Apart from dehydration, other factors make you prone to kidney stones. These include diabetes, obesity, family history, diet high in protein, sodium (salt) and sugar. Excess salt increases the amount of calcium filtered by your kidneys and significantly increases your risk of kidney stones. Reduce your intake of oxalate-rich foods like chocolate, soda-based drinks, cauliflower and spinach. In fact, depending on the type of stone, we customize the diet for our patients. We do blood tests and urine analysis, take note of mineral markers, and depending on deficiencies and excesses, supplement them or find ways to reduce them. Small stones of 3 mm and 4 mm can pass out through the urethra with medication. Only large stones require surgical intervention.
