There's a new solution for waterlogged iPhones that's gaining popularity, as a recent test by The Verge's David Pierce and the repair experts at iFixit shows. The method involves playing certain YouTube videos that play low-frequency sounds, designed to expel water from a waterlogged smartphone's speakers.
Puzzled by the claims made in several videos on YouTube that they could remove water from an iPhone using sound, Pierce decided to collaborate with iFixit to test these claims. The experiment involved immersing the iPhone 13 in water treated with UV dye, then playing one of these special videos. After leaving the device to dry overnight, the results were shocking.
According to the report, the sound waves produced by the video actually expelled water from the iPhone's speakers, as well as the speakers of other smartphones from brands like Google and Nokia that were tested. The initial blast of sound was particularly effective at clearing water from the speaker area.
However, it is important to note that this method could only extract water from the speaker grille. When the iPhone was later disassembled, the UV dye revealed that water had remained in other parts of the device, indicating that the sound-based method does not provide a comprehensive solution to completely dry out a water-soaked phone.
Interestingly, Apple has already included a similar feature in its Apple Watch, which uses sound to expel water from the device. This method is more efficient on the Apple Watch, possibly due to its smaller size and fewer internal cracks than the iPhone.
While modern iPhones, including the upcoming iPhone 15, have an IP68 rating, meaning they can be submerged in up to six meters of water for up to 30 minutes, it's important to remember that waterproofing can deteriorate over time. Apple's warranty doesn't cover water damage, so it's prudent to avoid exposing your iPhone to water whenever possible.
This sound-based technology offers a promising option for dealing with a waterlogged iPhone speaker, but shouldn’t be treated as a complete solution for more extensive water damage.
