Champai Soren to join BJP on August 30, announced Himanta Biswa Sarma


Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren will join the BJP in Ranchi on August 30, announced Assam Chief Minister and BJP's Jharkhand Election Co-in-charge Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sharing a photo of Champai Soren meeting Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, Sarma said in a post on X, “Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a prominent adivasi leader of our country, @champaisorin. Recently, there were speculations about his defection from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) when he visited Delhi along with some MLAs on August 18.

Later on August 18 he issued a statement on XStating that he felt “pain” from his people when his programs were canceled three days before the meeting where he was asked to resign as chief minister.

He said in the statement that he had three options: retire from politics, start a new party or join another “associate”.

Notably, 67-year-old Champai Soren became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand when Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 in an alleged land scam case.

He resigned from the post on July 3 after Hemant Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court.
