Couple flogged in Bengal: Police add tougher provisions for attempted murder, molestation Kolkata News

The police have registered provisions of attempted murder and molestation against a TMC worker, who has been publicly accused. Flogging a man and a woman Alleged extramarital affairs in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal.

The accused, Taj Al Hussain alias JCB, was arrested on Sunday and produced before the Islampur Sub Divisional Court on Monday. The court handed over the accused to the police on a five-day physical remand.

After a video of a man and a woman being flogged, kicked and punched in a “Saleshi Sabha (Kangaroo Court)” went viral and sparked outrage, the police had registered a case of their own. The kangaroo court was reportedly summoned after the couple was accused of extramarital affairs.

The man who appeared to be leading the attack was eventually identified by the police as Hussain.

A case has been registered under Section 323/325/354/307/34 of the IPC. The provisions deal with attempt to murder, assault with intent to injure the honor of a woman, voluntarily causing grievous hurt and common intention,” said a senior police officer.

A festive offering

The incident took place on June 28 in Uttar Dinajpur district. Sources said that around 200 people were present when the sentence was pronounced.

While the opposition parties have pointed fingers at the Trinamool Congress leadership in Bengal, terming it as 'Taliban Raj' and blaming it for the breakdown of law and order in Bengal, the TMC leadership has condemned the incident and said It has been reiterated that the accused has been arrested.

BJP state president and MP Skanta Majumdar said that the accused is a close associate of TMC MLA Hameedul Islam. “Such incidents are happening frequently and it proves that people have no faith in the administration. It seems that a section of TMC leaders believe that there is a separate country within the country. Peace and Aman has been broken,” he said.

Former TMC Rajya Sabha MP Shonk Sen said, “Our party and the government do not support such activities. The police have taken suo motu notice and arrested the main accused. The victim has been provided with police security. If someone else is involved, he will not be forgiven.

“TMC has zero tolerance for such incidents. On the contrary, during the Left regime and in the BJP-ruled states… they never condemned such incidents or took any action. That's the difference,'' Sen said.
