Gikas Magiorkinis, a professor of epidemiology and a member of an expert committee advising the Health Ministry, said on Saturday that the number of people hospitalised and tested positive for the coronavirus has nearly doubled since the end of May.

“Intubations are currently at a low level, although it is too early to draw safe conclusions, as they usually require a longer period of hospitalisation,” he told Proctorio FM radio.

He further added, “Based on the data available to us, it is very likely that we are experiencing a phase of exponential growth, that is, we will see the number of hospitalisations continue to increase, but we do not expect any dramatic situation that would put pressure on the healthcare system.”

Magiorkinis said the epidemiological curve this year has an upward trend compared to the same period last year, when it was downward. The increase in the number of hospitalizations in the summer of 2023 occurred 4 to 5 weeks later than in 2024. “So, this trend is a shift towards appearing earlier. It is too early to say for sure, but we have a significant possibility that there is an increase in circulation [of Covid-19] “This program will begin early summer this year,” he said.
