New Delhi: The External Affairs Ministry on Monday hit back at Bangladesh's allegations of “non-cooperation” by New Delhi. The doors i Faraq barragewhich was done “without any prior warning”.
Denying the allegations, MEA “We have seen media reports of the gates of the Faraka barrage being opened which will allow 1.1 lakh cusecs of river water to flow in its natural course into the Ganga/Padma river,” said spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
“This is a normal seasonal development due to increased inflow due to heavy rainfall upstream in the catchment areas of the Ganga river. It is to be understood that Farraka is only a barrage and not a dam. Whenever, the water level reaches the level of the pond, there is only a structure to divert 40,000 cusecs of water into the Farraka canal using a system of gates on the main Ganga/Padma river. is done, while the rest of the water goes to Bangladesh,” he added.
“The data, as per protocol, is regularly and timely shared with the concerned authorities of the Joint River Commission in Bangladesh. This has been done this time as well.
We have seen fake videos, rumors and fear mongering to create misunderstandings. It should be countered with strong facts,” he added.
Earlier, Information and Broadcasting Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Naheed Islam, said that India opened the dam without issuing any prior warning and without giving Bangladesh a chance to prepare.
He said that India has shown non-cooperation and inhuman behavior by suddenly opening the dam.
He further said that the people of both the countries should jointly find a way to deal with such natural calamities.
