Amid rising cases of the vector-borne disease, the government on Monday directed district officials to immediately clear all dengue hotspots based on entomological alerts, officials said.

It also asked central government offices in West Bengal to ensure cleanliness and adequate preventive measures in under-construction projects, including the Kolkata Metro Railway.

“The state is facing the threat of dengue and the TMC government is busy telling people about the Chief Minister’s recent visit to Spain. State Congress President Adhir Ranjan Choudhary said, I am not an expert, but being a common man, I can easily understand how lax the state government has been in dealing with the situation.

Senior BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya said the TMC government was trying to “hide” the death toll.

“The problem of dengue in Bengal is not a new thing. But the TMC government’s way of dealing with it is the most lax. Every year whenever this threat spreads, the state government goes into denial mode and calls it an unknown fever. The state government is trying to hide dengue deaths in the state,” he said.

Responding to the allegations, TMC asked opposition parties to refrain from politicizing the issue.

“The state government is making every possible effort to resolve the problem and the situation is under control. The opposition BJP and other parties are trying to fish in troubled waters,” said TMC leader Kunal Ghosh.

Although more than 30 deaths have been reported from across the state, the health department has confirmed only three so far.
