On June 19, an “elderly man” with a blue turban and white beard was standing in the departure immigration queue at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. He identified himself as 67-year-old Rashvinder Singh Sahota who was traveling to Canada. As he spoke, the CISF personnel on duty noticed something odd: the man's voice belied his age. On closer inspection, they noticed that his skin looked completely free of wrinkles.
As it turned out, the man posing as a sexist was a 24-year-old man, Guru Sevak Singh, traveling on another man's passport. He was arrested.
His wife Archana Kaur, who was about to attempt a similar impersonation, fled the scene. He was later arrested.
Police said that the accused and his wife are residents of Lucknow and were staying in a hotel in Mahipalpur for a week.
A case of cheating has been registered against Guru Sevak, the police said.
“During the investigation of the case, Guru Sevak revealed that the couple had gone to America to seek employment and a better livelihood. Guru Sevak was contacted by a friend of the agent Jagjit Singh alias Jaggi. Jagjit “Guru Sevak and his wife were promised to be smuggled through Canada via Canada on another person's passport for Rs 60 lakh,” DCP (IGI) Usha said. Ranganani said.
Guru Sevak told the police that he had already given Jaggi Rs 30 lakh. He said that the remaining amount was to be transferred after reaching the destination. “According to the deal, Jaggi arranged for him the passport of one Rashendra Singh Sahota. Similarly, the passport of one Harjeet Kaur was arranged for his wife's trip to Canada,” Ranganani added.
A story of transformation
On the agent's instructions, one of Jaggi's associates takes Guru Sevak to a saloon in Tilaknagar to make him look like an “old man”.
“One of the salon staff gave him a makeover to look like a passport photo… He got his beard white for Rs 2,000,” said an officer.
Police also arrested Agent Jaggi from his hideout in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand. During interrogation, Jaggi told the police that he was a graduate who ran a company called “True Talk Imagination” in Bijnor, UP. The company deals in booking tickets and sending people abroad. “During his work, he came in contact with some agents who used to cheat people on the pretext of sending them abroad and started working with them,” the DCP said.
The owner of the salon where the conversion took place is being questioned, an official said, adding that she is now a witness in the case.
