Karnataka's dominance in the GCC sector is undeniable, with Bengaluru alone hosting more than 30% of the country's GCCs. Dr. Kaur shared his vision for the future, projecting that Karnataka could see the establishment of 1,000 new GCCs in the next five to six years. “Our focus is on expanding our presence and strengthening the ecosystem through targeted initiatives, one of which is this dedicated skills policy,” he explained, highlighting the collaboration that both industry leaders and the public have had. invites you to contribute your insights. “The policy will be open for suggestions next week, which will help stakeholders shape its final version,” he added.
He said that the proposed skills policy is structured around four main pillars:
- Expanding the talent pool: The introduction of the NIPUNA scheme aims to enhance local talent through strategic partnerships with industry leaders. This initiative is designed to ensure a continuous supply of highly skilled professionals to meet the growing needs of the GCCs.
- Emphasis on research and development: As the hub of the R&D-centric GCCs, Karnataka plans to deepen its commitment to innovation and research. By fostering a culture of creativity, the state seeks to further consolidate its leadership in the technology sector.
- Simplifying business operations: To encourage investment and growth, the new policy will introduce measures to streamline regulations, making it easier for businesses to set up and thrive in Karnataka.
- Beyond Bengaluru: Recognizing the potential of regions outside the capital, the policy plans to develop six new clusters, initially focusing on Mysore, Hubli-Dharwar, Belgaum and Mangalore. The goal of this expansion is to create new opportunities across the state and distribute growth more equitably.
Cultivating innovation in emerging clusters
Dr. Kaur shared insights on strategies to promote growth in these emerging regions. “Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, and Mangalore are poised to become the next innovation hub in Karnataka,” he said. The government is committed to providing financial incentives for companies investing in these clusters, which are already attracting international interest, particularly in areas such as cyber security in Mysore and fintech in Mangalore.
Streamlining support for investors
To facilitate a smooth investment process, Karnataka is setting up Global Technology Centers (GTCs) in these clusters. “These GTCs will offer plug-and-play facilities, allowing companies to explore market opportunities before making big commitments,” noted Dr Kaur. He said Karnataka's strong infrastructure and connectivity is well equipped to support this ambitious expansion.
