England vs Australia, ODI Series – Mahli Beardman added to Australia ODI squad as cover

Australia have added 19-year-old Western Australia pacer Mahli Beardman to their ODI squad for the five-match series against England, looking to bolster their growing fast bowling injury list. The series begins at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
The 19-year-old, 6ft 2in tall Beardman had a stellar season in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, notably taking 3 for 15 in Australia's win over India in the final in Benoni, earning him the Man of the Match award.

Although he has played just one List A match in his career so far, he was selected by the Perth Scorchers in August for this year's Big Bash League, and is one of a squad of young Australian fast bowlers being closely monitored by the selectors, along with Callum Vidler, Charlie Anderson and Tom Straker.

He has been included in the squad after a number of injuries to Australia's fast bowlers. Xavier Bartlett suffered a hamstring strain during the first T20I against England, while Nathan Ellis was ruled out of the Scotland tour after his injury suffered in the Hundred worsened.

Spencer Johnson was ruled out before the tour began, while Riley Meredith has not played since the first T20I in Scotland as both players suffered muscle issues.

Josh Hazlewood was doubtful for the T20 series after arriving late in the UK with a minor calf strain, but he played a key role in Australia's win in Southampton before being rested for the second match in Cardiff.

while talking to Sen Last week, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said his side would closely monitor the fitness of their “big three” bowlers – Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc – ahead of the five-Test home series against India later this year.

“A lot of our priorities will be centred around that,” Australia coach Andrew McDonald told SEN last week. “You'll see that in how we manage our players. We'll be paying a lot of attention to who does what. [Sheffield] “Shield cricket is starting in the summer to make sure they are ready for the first Test match,” he said.

Beardman and Cooper Connolly, who were part of the T20 squad, were on the Australian bench in Perth the last two summers as part of Cricket Australia's under-19 induction program.
Connolly will remain in the UK with the ODI squad, with Ben Dwarshis also included as cover for the remainder of the tour.

With the arrival of Starc, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell, Australia's team will also be strengthened for ODIs.
