Sporting Lisbon have confirmed that Manchester United have expressed an interest in paying the €10 million release clause in manager Ruben Amorim's contract.
The Portuguese club has informed the country's financial regulator about the talks.
Amorim is expected to be in charge when Sporting play a Taca da Liga tie against Nacional at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday night.
But this could be the 39-year-old's last game with the team.
Due to their listing on the stock market, Sporting is obliged to notify Portugal's financial regulator, the CMVM, of any significant impact on the club's business.
The statement to the CMVM read: “The game is subject to the conditions and is intended to fulfill the information obligation arising from the provisions of Article 17 of Regulation (EU) No 596/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council. To be done April 16, inform the market in the following terms: “1. Manchester United FC expressed interest in hiring coach Ruben Amorim, and Sporting SAD's board of directors referred to the terms and conditions provided in the employment contract between the company and the coach, specifically regarding termination. For clause and amount. Euro 10,000,000.00;
“2. Manchester United FC expressed interest in paying Sporting SAD the amount of the above clause.
