A man is in critical condition after he lost blood to a “serious bite” from a shark in east Florida on Friday, authorities said.

The Nassau County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit said they found the man on the boat, bleeding heavily from a severe wound to his forearm.

“Acting quickly, a deputy boarded the vessel and applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding,” the sheriff's office said.

An officer then took over the watercraft and took the man to the boat ramp where local fire rescue officials were waiting.

The victim was taken to a hospital and is in serious condition, the sheriff's office said. He is expected to recover.

The man was on a boat off Florida's east coast at the time of the shark attack, officials said.

The incident comes shortly after three swimmers were injured in two separate shark attacks off the Florida Gulf Coast in early June.

A woman in Walton County in northwest Florida had part of her arm bitten off.

In addition to the severed leg, he also suffered “serious injuries” to his hip, officials said.

That same day, at another beach just a few miles away, two teenage girls in the water were attacked.

Officials said one girl “sustained serious injuries to her upper leg and an arm” while the other suffered minor injuries to one leg.

Shark attacks are more common in Florida than in most parts of the world.

According to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File, there were 16 unprovoked shark bites in Florida in 2023.

This represents 44% of the US total and 23% of the worldwide total.

There were no shark attack deaths in the state last year.

According to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File, there are about 70 to 100 shark attacks worldwide each year, killing about five people.
