For the first time, classmates will head the Indian Army and Navy together.

The officers were classmates at Sanek School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.

New Delhi:

For the first time in Indian military history, two classmates, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi and Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, will be the Service Chiefs of the Indian Army and Navy.

Chief of Navy Admiral Dinesh Tripathi and Army Chief-designate Lt. Gen. Upender Dwivedi studied at the Scenic School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. They were together in school from Class 5-A in the early 1970s.

The roll numbers of the two officers were also around each other, as Lt Gen Dwivedi's roll number was 931 and Admiral Tripathi's was 938.

Their bond was strong from their early school days and they stayed in touch throughout despite being in different forces.

A defense official who knows the two officers said that strong camaraderie between the top leadership in military affairs plays a vital role in strengthening the working relationship between the forces.

“This rare honor of nurturing two brilliant students, who would lead their respective services after 50 years, goes to the Sanek School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh,” Defense Ministry spokesperson A Bharat Bhushan Babu said in a tweet.

Two classmates have also been appointed at the same time with a gap of about two months.

Admiral Tripathi assumed command of the Indian Navy on May 1, while Lt Gen Dwivedi will assume his new appointment tomorrow.

Lt Gen Dwivedi has spent a long time as the commander of the Northern Army where he has faced ongoing operations in the military standoff on the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

Born on July 1, 1964, Lt. Gen. Upinder Dwivedi was commissioned in the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984.
