Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi passed away at the age of 72.

Senior BJP leader Sushil Modi passed away this evening at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi. The 72-year-old was battling cancer and was admitted to the intensive care unit of AIIMS for the past one month.

The stalwart leader, once the most popular face of the BJP in Bihar, had also withdrawn from the ongoing Lok Sabha polls due to his ill health. He made the announcement on social media with a post on X, earlier on Twitter on April 3.

“I have been battling cancer for the last 6 months. Now I think it's time to tell people. I won't be able to do anything in the Lok Sabha elections. I have told everything to the Prime Minister. Always grateful. And always dedicated to country, Bihar and party,” his post read.

His absence was expected to be felt the most in Bihar, where he had considerable influence over the three-decade-old party.

Over 11 years between 2005 and 2020, in two terms, he served as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's deputy.

Senior BJP leaders Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Ravi Shankar Prasad also mourned him.

Former Bihar Chief Minister and HAM chief Jitan Ram Manjhi also posted his condolences on X. “Heartfelt tributes to our dear friend, former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and former Member of Parliament of Rajya Sabha Mr. Sushil Kumar Modiji on his demise,” his post read.

Political rivals Tejashwi Yadav — who slipped into Sushil Modi's shoes when he was with the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal as part of Nitish Kumar's grand alliance — and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee are also on him. Mourned.

Mamata Banerjee posted, “Saddened to hear of the sad demise of former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Sushil Kumar Modi. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. May the departed soul rest in peace.”
