From Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 to Vivo X Fold 3 Pro – Firstpost

Until recently, foldable smartphones were just a concept, but Samsung has made it a reality for consumers. Like most things related to technology, this new category of phones had its teething problems and there were concerns about their durability as well. Most of them have been resolved over the last few years and things are pretty much settled now.

Starting from 2023, we have seen the arrival of some high-quality foldable phones in the country, and if you are looking for one, we have quite a few options to choose from. In this article, let's take a look at the top options available in India at the moment. For now, we will only explore the larger full-sized variants, not the flip kind.

Best Foldable Smartphones of 2024

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5
Let's start with the brand that started it all in this segment. The latest version of Samsung's foldable flagship, the Galaxy Z Fold5 is a powerful and feature-packed device. From raw performance to excellent cameras, this smartphone is everything a flagship device should be. Let's start with its two displays. You get a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X outer display with a resolution of 2316 x 904 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection.

When you open the phone, a bright and vibrant 7.6-inch foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X appears with a resolution of 2176 x 1812 pixels, 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+ compliance. The large display offers a great user experience whether you're taking notes, watching videos, surfing the web, switching between multiple apps, or gaming. The UI adjusts smartly when switching between the two screens. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 debuted with Android 13 and is upgradable to Android 14 with the company's One UI 6.1.

The design too has seen an improvement over its predecessor, but it hasn't added any extra weight or bulk; in fact, it's thinner than the previous generation foldable phone. The redesigned flex hinge feels much smoother and sturdier, with almost no gap between the two halves. The phone is powered by Qualcomm's previous flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, and you get a choice of up to 12GB of RAM and internal storage ranging between 256GB to one TB.

Like all the phones on this list, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 also has five cameras for photography – three at the back and one above the display. On the back, you get a 50MP primary camera with PDAF and optical image stabilization (OIS). Along with this, there is a 10MP telephoto camera with OIS that offers 3X optical zoom, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera with 123-degree FOV. The cameras do a great job in both photography and videography.

oneplus open
OnePlus had a few extra months to perfect their foldable phone since the launch of the Fold5 and they made the most of this time. The OnePlus Open marked a very impressive debut for the company in the foldable smartphone segment. The phone is packed with flagship features and is extremely impressive on multiple fronts. All the concerns they had about foldable phones related to bulkiness, weight, durability, and screen crease were addressed to a large extent.

Some smart design elements and material choices helped keep the thickness and weight down. It was thinner and lighter than the competition (until a few weeks ago) without compromising on build quality, and the display crease is barely visible. Talking about the display, the inner and outer screens are great for both entertainment and productivity. The outer display measures 6.31 inches with a resolution of 2484 x 1116 pixels. When opened, you get a larger 7.82-inch display with a resolution of 2440 x 2268 pixels.

Both are LTPO3 Fluid AMOLED displays that support 10-bit colour, 120Hz variable refresh rate, Dolby Vision compliance, and feature a peak theoretical brightness of 2800 nits. Apart from that, the OnePlus Open has powerful processing hardware (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with 16GB of RAM), ample storage (512GB), and excellent cameras that cover all the major bases.

You get a 48MP primary camera with Sony LYTIA-T808 CMOS sensor and OIS, an OmniVision OV64B 64MP periscope telephoto camera with OIS that offers 3X optical zoom and 6X hybrid near-lossless zoom and a 48MP ultra-wide camera with Sony's IMX581 sensor, 114-degree FOV and autofocus that can also work as a macro camera. You also get Hasselblad colour tuning as well as portrait photography tricks to improve your experience.

Good hardware as well as good software is needed to make the overall experience better, and OxygenOS 14 does exactly that. It adapts perfectly to two screens and the transition is seamless. The UI smartly adjusts to the larger display when you open the phone and makes good use of the extra screen real estate to facilitate multitasking. A perfect blend of design, hardware, and software makes the OnePlus Open a great device and one of the best foldable phones in the country.

It remains the most affordable full-size foldable phone in India so far and costs less than half the price of the other phones listed here. But don't be fooled by its modest price; this is a highly competitive device that does most of the same things as other big brands.
