Google Messages for web gets animated emoji, updated branding

After rolling out widely on Android, Google Messages for web has received updated branding and animated emojis.

This small change adds a four-colored ‘G’ in front of “Messages” in the upper-left corner of the web and tablet experiences. This more clearly ties RCS (and SMS) to Google as the company works to strengthen its consumer messaging strategy.

Meanwhile, and tablet PWAs have picked up animated emojis in SMS and RCS conversations. The feature debuted on Android in June: “One of the emojis I use most often, “grimacing,” gets a shifty-eyed animation, while “crying out loud” perfectly conveys waterworks. ” The animation will loop for a few seconds before ending.

It is widely introduced on all customers other than phones (even in the beta channel), although availability has been increasing recently. As part of this change, emojis will no longer be placed in message bubbles and will appear directly in the background.
