Google Pixel Tablet 3 will take another step towards replacing your laptop

TL;DR

  • Google is adding a second USB-C port controller to its Tensor G6.
  • The port supports external displays via DisplayPort and is specifically for tablets.

Google has been working on a number of features to make its Pixel tablets a work machine for some time now. A desktop mode without the external display and rumored keyboard accessory is in the works, which isn't complete yet, but I'm hearing it may be for the next version of the tablet. The 2027 Pixel tablet (which we assume will be the third entry in the series) would surprisingly take another step in that direction.

Thanks to a leak from Google's gChips division, Android Authority It turns out that Google is planning to add a second USB-C port to its Tensor G6 chip, specifically for tablet use cases.

Pixel Tablet 3 may have more expansion options than most tablets

Before we move on, it's worth mentioning that the Pixel tablet technically already has two open USB ports – one is the regular USB-C port you'd expect, and the other is a USB 2.0 connection to connect Hidden in the pogo pin used. Doc. This second connection isn't what this article is about – the Pixel Tablet 3 (or whatever it will be called) will still have this connection in the form of a pogo pin, which also means Google is committed to the Dock concept.

Google appears to be committed to the Dock concept, but will add an additional USB-C port.

The document we saw mentions that the Tensor G6 will have a second USB-C controller for “tablet use cases only.” The port will be USB 3.2 compliant (although the exact speed is unclear – I suspect it will be 10Gbps) and will support DisplayPort output (with up to two displays when used with daisy-chaining). The port's connections will also be physically on the opposite side of the chip to make signal routing easier for tablets, suggesting that Google intended it specifically for that type of device.

A second USB port would definitely make the tablet more versatile for desktop and other advanced uses. While Android is still not a true desktop OS, it can easily handle simple tasks, and two USB ports as well as a keyboard accessory would make it much more useful. Also interesting is the fact that Google will support up to four external displays in this configuration (two displays will be connected directly to the USB-C port and the other two will be connected via daisy-chaining).

Is Google going to make a “Pro” tablet?

Although we don't have much specific information about a future Pixel tablet, it looks like Google is creating a more “pro” device that could potentially even replace your laptop, similar to what Apple is doing with its iPad Pro. Is doing it together. Although Android is clearly not ready to become the desktop OS for everyone, there really is no reason for many people not to make the switch. I'm excited to see if Google decides to move the tablet in that direction – and if so, how well it does.

Would you consider replacing your laptop with a future Pixel tablet?
