Google Tasks was updated with Material You in February 2023, and today a major redesign further overhauls the Android app.
Tasks previously used a bottom app bar that was carried over from Material 2 but modernized for Material U. This component is called “Display”[s] Navigation and key actions at the bottom of mobile and tablet screens.” A FAB appeared on the right for creating new tasks, while you also got a list switcher, sort by, and an overflow menu that opened as a sheet.
The bottom app bar has now disappeared and only the floating action button remains.
Meanwhile, Google has completely redesigned the main list interface with a card motif. The active ones appear at the top, while there is another card for “done”. Sorting options and overflow (for renaming and deleting) appear in the top-right corner.
These cards have a darker background (in dark theme) than the rest of the app, while matching the tasks.google.com UI introduced in November.
This is a server-side redesign with version 2024.08.05.x of Google Tasks for Android. If you don't see it yet, force stop from App info. It's not currently available on iOS.
In terms of Material 3, it would also be nice if Google Tasks modernized its homescreen widget so that it more or less matches Google Calendar's schedule widget.
