Grading Justin Fields, offense, defense vs. Chiefs – NBC Sports Chicago

Kansas City, MO. – A tumultuous week for the Bears ended Sunday when Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs beat a charter franchise so badly they might want to consider closing up shop.

The 41-10 loss at Arrowhead Stadium doesn’t do justice to Sunday’s defeat. The Chiefs won the early possessions but scored in the next seven to take a 41–0 lead.

Mahomes only played 2.5 quarters, which was enough to ensure Travis Kelce scored a touchdown with new girlfriend Taylor Swift in the crowd.

The Bears were miserable on Sunday, which might be too good.

Here’s a Week 3 report card for the Bears, with one group faring worse than the rest:

pass offense

Justin Fields said he wants to say “F it” and play for free on Sunday. Maybe the Bears staff didn’t change the game plan, or maybe Fields just broke down, but either way, the offense was an absolute disaster on Sunday in Kansas City.

In a game in which the Bears were trailing for more than 45 minutes, Fields went only 11 of 22 for 99 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Fields holds the ball too long, the offensive line is terrible, and the scheme does nothing to mitigate the group’s weaknesses.

Rotten stuff.

crime committed in haste

The only thing the 2022 Bears did well was run the football.

This team is not able to perform consistently well on the field.

The Bears did some nice things in the run game to start Sunday’s contest, but they couldn’t sustain it and had to give up the run for the most part after halftime.

Fields rushed 11 times for 47 yards, while Roshon Johnson and Khalil Herbert rushed 15 times for 69 yards.

Did I mention the offensive line stinks?

pass defense

I don’t want to be too hard on a unit that already has lost Eddie Jackson and Kyler Gordon before losing Jaylon Johnson and Tyreek Stevenson in the first half.

As you might expect, Mahomes made the Bears’ patchwork secondary.

With no rush to speak of, the Bears had little chance to stop Mahomes from taking them apart while barely breaking a sweat.

run defense

The front part of the bear is disgusting. Apart from Andrew Billings, none of them have been able to perform anything solid during the three matches.

Linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards have done a good job of cleaning up the mess, which is about all you ask of two top-tier linebackers who don’t have a steady force to eat blocks in front of them.

Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire found little resistance from the Bears’ front, rushing for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Womp womp.

to teach

Can I give less than an F? We will make something.

See, it is believed that Beas will lose to the Chiefs. One team is the defending champion, and the other is working on defending its title as a league doormat.

But the fact that this Bears team – which spent money and high draft capital on talented players in the offseason – looks worse than last year’s unit is a complete indictment on the entire coaching staff.

There was no answer and no adjustment. Players are never put in position to succeed in any aspect of football.

A lot of this stems from questionable roster construction, but as far as game-day operations go, the Bears’ staff made a complete mess of itself on Sunday and throughout the first three weeks.
