New Delhi: You might be surprised to know this but it's true, Roar actor Gulshan Devaiah hasn't eaten more than one meal a day since 2018. Talking about this, he said, “I like this way of eating. One of the advantages is that I have the freedom to eat what I like without any strict dieting as portion control is automatic. However, one of the disadvantages is that limiting the variety of food can lead to nutritional gaps, resulting in vitamin deficiencies, which I experience.” So, you can have some vitamin deficiencies, and I have too. My B12 and D3 is something that gets a little low. So, I have to supplement these through prescription-based medicines. I have been doing this since 2018, Devaiah told me.

Even when he is on vacation or back to his hometown in Bengaluru, he tries to follow the plan and diet restrictions only. OMAD is a great tool if your main goal is to lose body fat. However, gaining muscle mass during OMAD can be challenging because the body is in a catabolic phase which means it is breaking down during this period. For a person who wants to gain muscle mass, it is important to be in an anabolic state.

Weight Loss Benefits from the OMAD Diet

Manish Suhas Dalvi, founder and sports nutritionist at SuperEvol, says, “Since we are eating less, we are consuming fewer calories, leading to a calorie deficit and therefore weight loss. Additionally, OMAD can improve insulin sensitivity which also promotes fat burning due to prolonged fasting.” For people who are fit and can live without consuming too many calories, this is a beneficial diet.

Risks Associated with the OMAD Diet

People suffering from medical problems such as diabetes and eating disorders should consult a doctor and get the necessary tests done before starting OMAD.

Individuals following such a diet may also face nutritional deficiency issues as it is difficult to get all the nutrients from a single meal. Also, people may overeat due to increased appetite and they may prefer to eat junk food instead of whole foods while being on OMAD.

Thus, following the OMAD diet can be beneficial for people who do not suffer from too many diseases and can starve for long periods on fewer calories. However, people suffering from diseases should avoid such a diet and maintain a balance of nutrients for the body to function.
