A bus carrying students faced a critical situation on Tuesday (July 2) afternoon when its wheel fell into an 8-meter pothole. The incident occurred after a section of the four-lane Gurugram-Sohna elevated flyover collapsed for the second time in eight months, officials said.
However, potential disaster was averted after another bus pulled up behind it and came to its rescue, allowing the school bus to continue its journey.
Gurugram-Sohna flyover again in caves
According to an official statement, a pothole, about 8 meters deep and two feet wide, appeared on the road leading to Sohna near SD Adarsh Vidyalaya.
On receiving information, officials of the road construction company and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.
Section of Gurugram-Sohna flyover closed for traffic
A senior GMDA official confirmed that around 30% of the road lanes have been closed for traffic, with repair work to begin soon.
An official attributed the road collapse to the ongoing construction work related to the sewer line, noting that the maintenance company would carry out the repairs.
Road problems persist on the Gurugram-Sohna flyover.
Earlier in December last year, a similar incident took place on the same four-lane elevated road towards Sohna, where a pothole about five feet deep and two feet wide was created due to the road breaking at the same place. It took about three months to repair the damage.
Now, the road has suffered another breakdown at the same place. Also in August 2020, the construction of the flyover was temporarily halted when a section of the road collapsed during its construction phase.
Construction of the 21-kilometer-long elevated flyover began in 2019 and was completed in two phases by 2021, opening to the public later that year. According to officials, the total cost of the project was Rs 1,944 crore.
