Haldwani violence: Authorities on Saturday lifted curfew on the outskirts of Uttarakhand's violence-hit Haldwani, two days after restrictions were imposed as communal tensions and violence engulfed the town during a demolition drive. Six rioters were killed in Thursday's violence, officials said. However, curfew will remain in place in Banbholpura area where there was widespread violence. Internet services are also suspended in violence-hit Haldwani, police said.

Violence erupted in Haldwani on Thursday after the district administration demolished an “illegally constructed” madrassa. According to the police, the madrassa, built illegally on government land, was given notice earlier, however, this incited mobs who attacked officials to stop the demolition. The rioters pelted stones outside Banbholpura police station and set vehicles on fire.
